The Director of Education and Mission Programs ("Director") is a full-time, exempt-statusposition operating under the general supervision of the Executive Director. S/he reportsto the Executive Director, is a member of the senior leadership team, and works closelywith all NSCDA staff at National Headquarters Dumbarton House and NSCDA leadershipto advance institutional strategic goals.The Director is charged with envisioning educational and mission focused programs forbroad audiences both on site at National Headquarters Dumbarton House and virtually.S/he provides leadership and strategic direction for the Education and Mission ProgramsDepartment, including education, events, and mission programs. S/he is charged with theastute management of full and part-time staff and budget revenue and expenses. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Works closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership to complete thecurrent strategic plans for the NSCDA and Dumbarton House and to envision andexecute a new combined strategic plan with financial and budgetary implications.* Evaluates current new and legacy programming, making recommendations onprograms and events that continue to meet goals and those that should bediscontinued.* As part of a staff team responding to the 2025-2028 Strategic Plan vision, theDirector develops implementation plans that meet the goals and objectives ofthe new plan.Leads the Education and Mission Programs team in initiatives to reach broad audiences,increase attendance, and realize greater member and visitor engagement through on siteand virtual experiences.* With the Education Manager and Mission Programs Assistant, envisions anddevelops on site and virtual programming that appeals to multiple audiences.* With the Education Manager and Curator of Collections, works to develop newperiod room and museum tours that attract and engage an increased number ofK-12, family, and adult learners.* With the Executive Director, Education Manager, Mission Programs Assistant,and Curator, develops plans for the new Education Wing rooms that utilize the latest technology to engage on site and virtual audiences, that meet the needs offamily and K- 12 onsite visitors, and that tell stories of "courage, preservation,and the rise of anation."Oversees the operations of the Visitor's Center.* Works with designers, contractors, and vendors to realize a Visitor's Center thatmeets visitor and staff needs.* With Education Manager, ensure staffing levels are appropriate for regulardaytime opening hours of the museum as well as any special events. Monitorspart time and seasonal staff expenditures to keep within budgeted funds.* Collaborates with Executive Assistant on order/reorder/placement of retailproduct that appeals to on site visitors.Provides strategic leadership to staff and volunteers by articulating and implementing avision for improved visitor and member engagement and experiences, including customerservice modeling/training.With the Events Manager, oversees rental contracts and income for on-site events. Directsthe Events Manager in the onsite and local execution of NSCDA and Dumbarton HouseBoard Meetings, collaborating with the Director of Philanthropy on mission focusedlectures and presentations.Assists the Director of Philanthropy with grant proposals and the cultivation of currentand prospective donors to education and mission programs. KEY ATTRIBUTES & QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor of Arts in museum studies, education, or related field with 4 years museumexperience with 2 years at the supervisory level. (Master of Arts in museum studies,education, art history or related field with 5 or more years of museum work withexperience in museum education, visitor engagement, and operations.)* Sound knowledge of museum education, practice, and visitors.* Demonstrated leadership skills as well as experience in strategic planning, operationsmanagement, and budget preparation/management.* Strong oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to communicateprofessionally and well with all levels of staff and supporters.* Sound independent judgment, excellent diplomatic skills, and a demonstratedattention to detail and quality; a consummate professional.* Ability to work beyond a 35-hour week, on evenings and on weekends as needed for NSCDA and Dumbarton House Board meetings, programs, or special events.* Flexibility, reliability, and confidentiality essential.
