The Pharmacy Technician reports to the Pharmacy Manager / Vice President of Pharmacy. The primary role of the Pharmacy Technician role is to assist the Pharmacists in their daily tasks and in maintaining the Pharmacy department under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. All tasks are performed are to be consistent with state and federal laws, corporate policies, and in a safe manner to ensure the health and safety of patients and residents. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform computer entry of resident/patient and prescription information accurately and efficiently by reading and interpreting physician's medication orders for pharmacist's verification Verify insurance coverage during order entry and communicate insurance issues with billing department or initiate prior authorization Communicate with medical/ nursing staff to clarify medication orders and resolve issues Provide excellent services over the phones and respond to questions or any concerns for non-patient specific clinical concerns Order, receive, process and shelf all products from the vendors Prepare and package medications requiring special handling in accordance with safety measures, to include preparing compounds, and accurately re-packaging and labeling medications Assist in filling, processing, and dispensing of all medications to the facilities, through a variety of processes such as Med-cart refill, stat box, emergency boxes maintenance, and others Adhere to safety practices in order to ensure quality care for patients/residents Assist with maintaining the drug inventory through inventory control practices Assure the Pharmacy is clean, organized, and all medications are stored in accordance with regulatory requirements Check for expiration dates on medications on a regular basis and remove expired medications from stock Other duties as assigned Qualifications for Pharmacy Technician Education and Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required Current National certification by PTCB Pharmacy technician license in Virginia Profound knowledge regarding generic/trade name, Rx abbreviations and calculations Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Computer Skills: Effective computer and keyboarding skills Working knowledge of pharmacy information systems General Skills: Demonstrate a history of reliable attendance Make a positive impact on team dynamics Provide recommendations to increase efficiency, accuracy, and productivity in the department Strong communication skills, both written and oral Strong prioritization skills and an ability to make decisions independently and effectively Able to operate equipment such as semi-automatic packing machines, computers, scanners and printers Familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices Physical Demands: Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time Talk or hear information or instructions Use hands to finger, handle, and/or feel: the ability to type, pick, pinch with fingers, hold, grasp or turn with hands, and perceive attributes or objects by touch Ability to lift/push/pull up to 10 pounds Stoop, kneel or crouch Clear vision at 20 inches or less Color vision and the ability to identify and distinguish colors Why join Virginia Health Services?
